A hillshade map is a terrain visualization technique that uses simulated light and shadows to make the shape of the Earth’s surface easier to understand. By representing elevation through brightness and darkness, hillshade creates a three-dimensional appearance from digital elevation data.
How Does Hillshade Work?
Hillshade is generated from an elevation model, such as a Digital Elevation Model (DEM). A virtual light source is positioned at a specific direction and angle, and the terrain is analyzed based on how it would be illuminated. Areas facing the light appear brighter, while surfaces facing away from it become darker.
Reading Terrain Through Light and Shadow
The contrast between light and dark areas helps reveal important terrain features. Ridges, valleys, steep slopes, and depressions become more visually apparent, allowing complex elevation patterns to be interpreted more easily.
