Why Do Mining Sites Have Benches?

At first glance, the stepped structure of an open-pit mine may look like a natural result of excavation. In reality, these levels are carefully engineered features known as benches.

Benches play an important role in controlling the shape and stability of an open-pit mine while also providing working space for mining activities.

What Is a Mining Bench?

A bench is a horizontal or near-horizontal level excavated into the side of an open-pit mine. Instead of creating one continuous and extremely high slope, the mine is developed through a series of smaller slope faces separated by benches.

The dimensions of each bench—including its height, width, and slope angle—are determined based on geological conditions, rock characteristics, mine design, and operational requirements.

Why Are Benches Important?

One of the primary purposes of benches is slope management.

An open-pit mine can reach considerable depths, creating large exposed rock slopes. Dividing these slopes into multiple sections allows engineers to manage the overall pit geometry more effectively.

Benches can also provide areas that help intercept falling rocks and reduce the distance that loose material can travel down a slope. This contributes to safer and more controlled pit operations.

Benches Are More Than a Safety Feature

Benches also serve practical operational purposes.

Mining equipment such as excavators and drilling rigs can operate at different levels of the pit. Benches may also accommodate haul roads, drainage systems, inspection routes, and other infrastructure required for daily mining activities.

This makes bench design an important part of balancing safety, productivity, and access.

How Are Benches Designed?

There is no single bench design that applies to every mine.

Engineers consider factors such as rock strength, geological structures, groundwater conditions, excavation methods, and the overall pit depth. These factors influence the appropriate bench height, width, slope angle, and spacing.

Geotechnical monitoring is also essential throughout the mine’s operation to identify changes in slope conditions and support safe decision-making.

The stepped appearance of an open-pit mine is therefore not simply a visual characteristic. Each level represents a combination of geological understanding, engineering design, and operational planning.
