How Is Coal Formed?

Coal is a fossil fuel formed through a geological process that takes millions of years. Its formation begins with ancient vegetation and continues through burial, compaction, heat, and pressure beneath layers of sediment.

Ancient Vegetation

Millions of years ago, dense vegetation grew in swampy, water-rich environments. When plants died, their organic remains accumulated in areas where limited oxygen slowed decomposition.

The Formation of Peat

As plant material continued to accumulate, it became buried beneath water and sediment. The compressed organic matter gradually formed peat, the initial stage in coal formation.

Burial and Compaction

Over time, additional layers of sediment covered the peat. Increasing pressure squeezed out water and other volatile materials, causing the organic material to become more compact.

Heat and Geological Pressure

As burial continued deeper underground, temperature and pressure increased. These conditions gradually altered the chemical and physical properties of the organic material through a process known as coalification.

From Peat to Coal

Coalification transforms the original plant material through several stages:

Peat → Lignite → Sub-bituminous → Bituminous → Anthracite

As coal progresses through these ranks, its carbon content and energy density generally increase, while moisture and volatile matter decrease.

A Process Measured in Millions of Years

Coal is the result of a slow geological transformation rather than a process that happens quickly. The characteristics of each coal deposit are influenced by the vegetation, burial conditions, temperature, pressure, and geological history it experienced over millions of years.
