Mining does not begin with digging. Before a deposit can be developed, geologists need to understand what lies beneath the surface—and drilling is one of the most important tools for obtaining that information.
Drilling Into the Earth
A mining drill rig creates a narrow borehole by rotating a drill string and cutting through layers of rock. Depending on the project and geological conditions, drilling can extend hundreds of meters below the surface, providing access to information that cannot be obtained through surface observations alone.
The Role of the Drill Bit
At the bottom of the drill string, the drill bit is responsible for cutting through the rock. Different geological formations require different drilling equipment, while diamond drilling is commonly used when the objective is to recover an intact cylindrical sample known as a core.
Recovering the Core
As drilling progresses, rock material is recovered through the drill system and carefully placed into core boxes in sequence. Each section represents a specific depth, allowing geologists to reconstruct the geological conditions encountered throughout the borehole.
Reading the Rock
Core samples provide valuable geological information. Geologists examine characteristics such as rock type, fractures, alteration, structure, and visible mineralization. The samples may also undergo laboratory analysis to determine their mineral and chemical composition.
Turning Samples Into Data
Drilling results are combined with geological observations, laboratory assays, and spatial information to build a clearer picture of the subsurface. These datasets can contribute to geological modelling, resource estimation, exploration planning, and future mine design.
