This stepped geometry is an essential part of open-pit mine design.

02 — Managing Slope Stability

Each slope section can be designed and monitored based on rock strength, geological structures, groundwater conditions, and other geotechnical factors.

03 — Controlling Rockfall

Loose rocks can detach from the pit wall during mining. Benches provide horizontal surfaces that can help catch or slow falling material before it travels farther down the slope.

04 — Supporting Mine Operations

Benches also create working areas where drilling, excavation, loading, and other mining activities can take place at different elevations.

05 — Connecting Different Levels

Haul roads and ramps are designed to connect different bench levels, allowing trucks and other equipment to move materials throughout the mine.

06 — More Than Just a Step

A bench is not simply a visual feature of an open-pit mine.
