By combining these measurements with the satellite\u2019s precise position, scientists can determine surface elevation with remarkable accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of its most important applications is measuring <strong>sea surface height<\/strong>. The satellite continuously sends radar signals toward the ocean and records the time required for the signals to return. Repeated observations allow scientists to identify variations in sea level across large areas and monitor how these patterns change over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Satellite altimetry is not limited to oceans. The technology can also be used to study <strong>ice sheets, glaciers, lakes, reservoirs, and other Earth surfaces<\/strong>. These measurements provide valuable information about changes in water levels, ice elevation, and surface characteristics that may be difficult to monitor through ground-based methods alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because satellites can observe extensive and remote areas, altimetry has become an important source of data for studying <strong>ocean circulation, sea-level change, climate processes, and water resources<\/strong>.
