Ash, lava, and other volcanic materials may cover large areas, making it difficult to assess the extent of the impact through direct observation alone. Satellite imagery provides an efficient way to monitor these changes across a wide area.

1. Capturing Changes After an Eruption

Satellite imagery can record the condition of an area before and after an eruption. By comparing images from different periods, changes in land cover caused by volcanic materials can be identified and analyzed.

2. Identifying Volcanic Materials

Volcanic deposits often have different spectral characteristics from vegetation, soil, water, and other surfaces. These differences in reflectance, color, and texture can be used to help identify areas covered by volcanic materials.

3. From Imagery to Distribution Map

The processed imagery can be integrated with GIS to delineate affected areas and create a spatial distribution map. This map provides information about where volcanic materials are concentrated and how far they have spread from the source.

4. Understanding the Pattern of Distribution

The distribution of volcanic materials is influenced by several factors. Wind direction can determine the movement of volcanic ash, while topography and slope can affect the movement of lava and other deposits along the terrain.

5. Supporting Volcanic Hazard Assessment

Mapping volcanic distribution is useful for understanding the extent of affected areas and monitoring changes over time. The information can support volcanic hazard assessment, environmental monitoring, and post-eruption evaluation.

Satellite imagery therefore plays an important role in transforming observations of volcanic activity into spatial information that can be analyzed more systematically.

Volcanic eruptions can rapidly change the landscape around a volcano.
