Located between approximately 160 and 2,000 kilometers above Earth’s surface, LEO offers a unique combination of proximity, speed, and efficiency that supports a wide range of applications\u2014from global internet services to environmental monitoring and scientific research.
One of LEO’s greatest advantages is its low communication latency. Because satellites orbit much closer to Earth than those in higher orbits, signals travel shorter distances, resulting in faster data transmission. This makes LEO ideal for broadband internet constellations, real-time communications, and emerging technologies that require rapid connectivity.
LEO is also the leading orbit for Earth observation missions. The shorter distance to the planet enables satellites to capture high-resolution imagery and collect detailed environmental data. Governments, researchers, and industries rely on these satellites for mapping, agriculture, disaster response, urban planning, and climate monitoring.
Scientific exploration is another major reason for LEO’s popularity. The International Space Station (ISS) and numerous research satellites operate within this orbital region, providing a microgravity environment for experiments in biology, medicine, materials science, and physics. These missions contribute to technological innovation while expanding our understanding of both Earth and space.
Although satellites in LEO have a smaller coverage area and require constellations of multiple spacecraft for continuous global service, advances in launch technology and satellite miniaturization have made these networks increasingly practical and cost-effective.
As demand for global connectivity and near-real-time Earth data continues to grow, Low Earth Orbit is expected to remain at the forefront of satellite innovation. Its balance of performance, accessibility, and versatility makes LEO a cornerstone of modern space infrastructure and an essential component of the technologies that connect and monitor our world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Low Earth Orbit (LEO) has become the preferred destination for many of today’s satellites.
