SRTM singkatan dari Shuttle Radar Topography Mission merupakan pesawat ulang-alik yang
\nmempunyai misi untuk mendapatkan data penginderaan jauh berupa elevasi atau ketinggian permukaan
\nbumi, data ini selanjutnya dikenal sebagai DEM (digital elevation Model).
\nBerdasarkan definisi tersebut SRTM menggunakan teknologi Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). SAR
\nadalah salah satu teknik pengambilan data menggunakan radar yang menggunakan jendela yang sangat
\nsempit.
\nYang perlu diperhatikan dalam penggunaan data DEM dari SRTM ini adalah bahwa data ketinggiannya
\nmerupakan ketinggian permukaan bumi termasuk tutupan lahannya (jadi bukan ketinggian permukaan
\ntanah), dalam hal ini termasuk juga ketinggian tajuk (pohon) dan juga gedung-gedung
\nSRTM memiliki struktur data yang sama seperti format GRID lainnya, yaitu terdiri dari sel-sel yang
\nsetiap sel memiliki wakil nilai ketinggian. Nilai ketinggian pada SRTM adalah nilai ketinggian dari datum
\nWGS1984, bukan dari permukaan laut.
